NEMA-MG1 › Motors and Generators
Motors and Generators
Scope
NEMA MG 1 is the definitive standard for practical information concerning performance, safety, testing, construction, and manufacture of alternating-current and direct-current motors and generators. It provides access to fundamental testing, as well as dimensional and application criteria relative to rotating machinery. The standard assists users in the proper selection and application of motors and generators.
MG1 2011 Edition applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for rotating electrical machines. It defines the requirements for protective enclosures that are in all other respects suitable for their intended use and which, from the point of view of materials and workmanship, ensure that the properties dealt with in this standard are maintained under normal conditions of use.
Although some definite-purpose motors and generators are included, the standards do not apply to machines such as generators and traction motors for railroads, motors for mining locomotives, arc-welding generators, automotive accessory and toy motors and generators, machines mounted on airborne craft, etc.
Notes
Claudia's Notes:
The most significant changes are seen in Parts 1, 12, and 20. Changes include enhanced efficiency tables for 8 pole machines and expansion of the large machine section.
To increase the publication’s utility and readability, the standard also includes a summary of changes for the current revision and previous editions with color coding throughout the document to mark affected sections.
